SPELD NZ membership is about so much more than assessment and tuition. We provide ongoing support including webinars, training, workshops, resources, libraries and advice, to ensure our students and their families continue to build their knowledge and confidence.
Our SPELD NZ libraries offer a wealth of specialised SLD/dyslexia resources that our members can borrow for free to enhance their learning, including books, games, puzzles and programmes.
“I took my 6-year-old to visit to the SPELD Auckland library and wow, we’re impressed! Tons of decodables (including LLLL non-fiction readers) + games etc. Highly recommend.”
All of our members also receive SPELD NZ’s e-magazine several times each year. Here’s a recent edition.

Other support for families
All SPELD NZ members have access to a free support package (via email). This includes a wealth of free resources and webinars on topics such as:
- Helping your child understand their struggles and feel empowered
- Ways to support your child at home through the primary, intermediate and secondary school stages
- How to best advocate for your child at school
- How to use materials to help your child with organisation
- How to access resources to support your child’s literacy and/or numeracy journey.
Our members also receive discounts on many of our online KĹŤwae Ako-Learning Capsules – we’ve created these to help you understand and support the neurodivergent learner.
SPELD NZ members can attend our two-day introductory courses at a heavily discounted rate – these are ideal for anybody with little knowledge of learning difficulties. These courses give insights into why a specific learning disability occurs, what it’s like to have dyslexia and other SLD, and strategies to help these learners in the classroom and at home.
Advocacy and lobbying
Another of SPELD NZ’s key roles is to advocate strongly on behalf of those with dyslexia/SLD. We’re frequently called on for comment by media, and for more than 50 years, we’ve been actively involved in lobbying both locally and nationally to ensure those with dyslexia and other SLD are given the best possible opportunities to succeed. For example, we put huge time and energy into written and face to face submissions to parliament.
