Canine Comfort
A canine companion can soothe and calm the frustrations of a child struggling to learn.
“Four years ago, I started working as a client coordinator with the charity Mobility Dogs. Our dogs are trained to offer practical support, companionship and security for people living with disabilities. I soon realised the potential benefits of this programme for families such as my own.
“My eldest daughter has cerebral palsy, and my younger daughter has learning disabilities. Both are animal lovers. We took a year to decide whether we were ready for a dog to come into our home before we applied. In 2022 we welcomed golden retriever Avery into our family
“Initially, I envisioned a companion dog would mainly be for my eldest daughter, given how they are trained and are able to help with tasks that support mobility. However, it turned out to be my youngest daughter who experienced remarkably positive changes. Struggling with reading, writing and diminished confidence due to her awareness of being different, she found solace in Avery. Homework and reading sessions used to be a source of stress. She would get so frustrated, freeze and then go into a rage. However, thanks to Avery’s calming presence, this now rarely happens. He’s a soothing and non-judgemental friend, snuggled up beside her.
“Walking to and from school with Avery transformed my daughter’s daily routine, providing a reassuring companion. Even on challenging school days, returning home to Avery’s company has become a source of comfort and joy for her.
“Dogs have an innate ability to provide the right kind of comfort at the perfect moment, and Avery has proven to be a blessing in our lives.”
